Curatorial Note

"I learned to weave from Aita, my Assamese grandmother, at the age of seven.

Mid mornings or late afternoons she used to set up her back strap loom in the veranda outside her kitchen so she could also keep an eye out for any stray hands that might venture towards the salted vegetables and fruits kept to dry in the sun for her pickles.

It was our time - she told me stories about her childhood, taught me to warp, showed me how to make a graph and translate it into a weave…

I did not know about the world of Art or Design then, weaving was what my grandmother did. It was what women all over the North East did, most often, together with friends and family. Years later, I chose to study and practise it as a profession.

Weaving is my cocoon, my secure space. It is a slow, repetitive process and over time, the mechanical act of weaving by hand has become a sensory connection for me to my subconscious.

Feelings are always a weave away.
