DAKKHAN KO CHIRA - WEAVES OF THE DECCAN

TEXTILES AND MARATHA STYLE ART FROM THE DECCAN

RESEARCHED AND REVIVED BY VINAY NARKAR

The Western Deccan Region of North Karnataka, a part of Telangana, most of Maharashtra and a part of Madhya Pradesh has been the focus of Vinay Narkar’s decade long quest to study the history of this region and the impact that it has had on its textiles and weaving.

This decade long study has enabled Vinay’s studio to create this one of a kind collection :  “Dakkhan Ko Chira”. Some of these sarees were already known, and some are weaves that have been discovered : all have come to life through the studio’s fascinating research journeys, including some that have been recreated from original pieces.

During the research, much was learnt through the Maratha miniature paintings of the time, a style that continued developing through the 17th and 18th centuries, all the while absorbing influences from the North as well as from the South. This show features some Maratha Style paintings that depict many of the sarees which have been brought to life by the team of artists atVinay's studio. Details cover the textiles, the jewellery and even the architecture.

‘Dakkhan ko Chira’, thus,  îs a celebration of the weaves of the Deccan both through textile and through art.
