In many cultures across Africa, such as the Maasai of Tanzania, beadwork serves as a significant marker of status and tribal identity. Maasai women adorn themselves with different types of beaded neck rings to signify a stage in life— whether they are young, of marriageable age, or married. In the late 19th century, European trade introduced colourful glass beads to Africa, which were valued by the African elite. The Maasai incorporated these glass beads into their necklaces, bracelets, and other jewellery, thus enhancing their traditional beadwork with new, vibrant materials.
