Narmada, the holy river on whose banks this weaving town is situated on, the river that flows rigorously, with uniformity, parallel to Rehwa society. The view of weavers when they look up from their looms, this river basin is home to variety of residential and migratory birds. One such bird is the Swan or Hansa, that is the inspiration for our next border, The Hansa border - a geometric tessellated border with a focused dot in the middle, representing the eye of a Swan. Symbolising knowledge and wisdom, sits perfectly balanced in this border design.
This mini checkered cotton saree, is an attempt at revival of an archival piece, Maheshwaris originally done in fine cotton simpler geometric designs, subtle monotone colors, with unique elements, this is a great example of what the authentic textiles must have looked in the 1700s. Taking forward Ahilya Bai’s preference towards the geometric patterns this border design in two kinds of zari to accentuate the hansa design placements of warp and weft facing. With Nakkhi and aankh adding elements of interest and completion.
