This serves as a profound metaphor for the mind - reflecting a "self" that is constantly shifting and changing. It reflects our sense of self but also distorts it, showing us only fragments of the whole picture. The mirror represents a passage into an alternate world - a place where what’s real is never entirely clear.
The three panels of the triptych offer a compelling way to represent time : the left panel represents the past, or the beginning; the central panel represents the present - culmination; the right panel conjures up the future - the afterlife.
