Gond or Pardhan painting is a popular indigenous art form from Madhya Pradesh dating at least 1500 years. The art relies on dots and dashes for its motifs. It depicts nature and myth, often with bright colours. At KAASH we worked with Gond artist Ram Singh Urveti on a series with the theme of a forest scape in night and day. For the first time the artists worked on blackboard during their residency at KAASH. Ram Singh Urveti is a prominent figure in India's contemporary tribal art canon. He works with his imagination, creating stories and then painting them. Trees are an important motif in Gond art, representing divine power and carrying the secrets of the Earth. Urveti's oeuvre remains true to this tradition and belief system, manifesting in a rich world of images rendered in a contemporary sensibility but carrying the magic of ancient spirits. For this exhibition, Ram Singh Urveti presents a monochromatic forest scape - mysterious, magical and meditative all at once.
