The traditional Yoruba beaded stools used by chiefs were quite simple in design—primarily round and backless, unlike the more ornate designs found in other Western African tribes such as the Bamoun in Cameroon. Contemporary Yoruba beaded chairs, however, have undergone significant changes in shape and style, influenced by European and South African traders. Like many traditional African artifacts, objects that once symbolized wealth, such as beads and cowrie shells, have evolved with changing trends.

Artisans hand beads on fabric—often repurposed cocoa bags—creating intricate panels of design that are then attached to cane chairs. The shape of these chairs has varied over the years in response to contemporary trends. Earlier designs featured folklore, animals, faces, horsemen, and interlinked symbols of peace and strength. While botanical and geometric motifs have always been part of the designs, they have become increasingly prominent in recent years to align with modern tastes. Beading as an art form is practised by several different groups both within and beyond Nigeria, reflecting the fluid nature of tribal and cultural boundaries.

Care instructions :

Handling & Placement
Always lift the chair from its frame, never by the beaded areas, to avoid loosening beads.

Place on a stable, dry surface, away from direct sunlight to prevent fading of colors.

Keep away from high humidity or damp areas to protect both wood and beadwork.

Cleaning
Dust gently with a soft, dry brush or a microfiber cloth.

Do not use water, cleaning sprays, or solvents on the beads or wooden parts.

For delicate bead cleaning, use a soft artist’s brush to lift dust without dislodging beads.
